RarKit for macOS

It helps to include what kind of archive it was, what you expected, and what happened instead. If RarKit showed you a message, quoting it word for word is the fastest way to a fix.

Can RarKit create RAR files?

No, and no app on the Mac App Store can. The RAR format is owned by RARLAB and its licence permits reading archives but explicitly forbids writing them. RarKit opens RAR archives and can create ZIP, 7z and TAR.

I set a password on a ZIP and the other person can't open it

Encrypted ZIP files made by RarKit use AES-256, which is the secure choice but which neither Windows Explorer nor the macOS Archive Utility can open. The person receiving it needs an app that supports it — RarKit, Keka or 7-Zip all work. RarKit warns you about this on screen before you create the file.

My archive is split into .001, .002, .003 files

Put every piece in the same folder and open the first one. RarKit finds the rest on its own. If a piece is missing it will tell you which one, instead of failing halfway through.

RarKit says it isn't allowed to read or write somewhere

macOS only lets sandboxed apps reach files you pick yourself. Open the archive from within RarKit, or drag it onto the window, and macOS grants access. The same applies to where files are extracted: choosing the destination yourself is what gives permission.

An archive opens elsewhere but fails in RarKit

Please write in — this is the case worth hearing about. RarKit verifies what it reads and refuses to produce files it can't confirm are intact, so it will report a problem that other apps quietly ignore. Sometimes that's the right call and the archive really is damaged. Sometimes it's our bug. Either way we'd like the file.
